For my creative habit I decided to spend 30 minutes a day sketching a single object. The objects would change daily so I could focus on more. The actual goal of this project for me was to better myself at getting down forms and figures. I really think these helped a lot in my drawing skills. I feel I have definitely improved
November 28, Week 2
For this week I drew cows. This was over Thanksgiving break and decided to drive I up to my cousin’s farm and draw some of his farm animals. I drew other animals as well, but found them really hard to capture due to the fact that they are forever in motion. I also learned that cows are really slow, nice to draw and cannot possibly be animals for these facts. In the middle of the page there’s a more stylized cow. It’s this evil looking cow that someone in my family has to wear when we go Christmas caroling every year.
Sunday November 23, Week 1
I focused mainly on anatomy for this week, hands being a big part of this. I wanted to focus on just getting a basic shape and showing their actions instead of having crazy detailed hands. These were taken mostly from TV. I was watching Walking Dead and the commercials in-between.. I also used my friends hands for some since they were there and wanted to fill up an entire page. I think these came out really well and I’m definitely getting the motions downs. I need to take more time and construct the basic shapes so I get everything where it needs to be.
Wednesday December 3, Week 3
For the last week I drew some snakes. I just really wanted to draw snakes since there was one in the film Ace in The Hole, which we watched in this class. I just really liked the snake. It’s in a box for all of its scenes and only eats gum in shiny silver wrappers so it was a super special snake. The snakes I drew are actually from some documentary clips on youtube. I had to force myself to not pause the video so it could resemble life more.
This week I wanted to experiment with animals, some food, and a small bit of perspective.
For animals I drew fish, dogs, wombats and snakes. I got these off of documentaries and forced not to pause the video. I think the snakes came out the very best.
Next I went outside and drew the perspective of some buildings around town. I didn’t want to add any detail because I wanted to focus on the structure.
Lastly I drew some vegetables. For these I just looked up pictures of vegetables. I could’ve gone to the grocery store and stared at vegetables for half an hour but I figured movement wasn’t a big factor in vegetables so I could just look some up online.
This week I was able to draw animals, some more objects and some hands. I think I have one less? page then what I should have but this is because it’s hard to draw when you’re trying not to puke. I got really sick this week and these are what I managed to get drawn.
For the animals, I managed to find some time (and strength) to drive up to my cousin’s farm and draw some of his farm animals. I managed to draw a few cows, some cats, deer, and some poor chickens. I learned that animals like to move quickly which makes them really hard to capture. I also learned that cows are really slow, nice to draw and cannot possibly be animals for these facts.
I then went back and drew some things on the table at home. Trying to capture depth in tiny objects is hard but it’s the only way I can learn. I’m thinking I need to practice perspective and have some large-scale depth studies. I also studied some cylinder shaped objects. I felt these really helped with this shape.
Lastly I drew more hands. These are from commercials, The walking dead and my friend.
Here’s the first week of sketches.
I did these for 30 minutes each day and drew from life, television and some of the book sources I obtained this weekend.
I forgot to include this statement in the proposal but I actually used to do something like this project in my free time in my last two years of high school. I’d sit down for 1-2 hours every night and sketch a page in my smaller sketchbook. I’m learning now that I’ve improved greatly quality and quantity wise.
I learned that human anatomy is something that is easier to me. For this week I did hands, feet, arms and then things, The things took longer than the anatomy and I got less done in my allotted time. I found out that it’s not hard to pull myself away from sketching once the time is over. I use this same method EVERY day when I workout so I’m just applying it here I guess.
My favorite from this week would have to be hands. I actually find that these are somewhat relaxing to draw and I’m probably going to do one page a week of them from now on to improve on my hands and to distress from whatever.
Below are this week’s drawings.
11/23 Stuff & Things
For my creative habit I’m proposing to fill one to two 11×17 sketchbook pages.a day. I’ll do this for 5-7 days a week for at least 30 minutes, max being an hour.
I’m wanting to do sketches everyday since it fits the bill for my animation major and I really need to practice in a few key areas.
The sketches themselves will change daily. For the first one I wanted to try out poses. I wanted these to be loose and focus on the gesture of the figure rather than the details of the actual person.
I’ll change to things like feet, hands, expressions, clothing, etc…
Here’s the first batch:
I only was only able to get a page filled in 30 minutes so I’m going to push it to an hour. I also draw on a smaller scale so I can probably fit more than enough on one page. I also like this idea just for the fact that if I need to use my drawings as reference, they’re all there on one page, meaning I don’t have to flip to get to what I want.
In doing this project I hope to better my animation skills via gestures. I’m aiming for dynamic figures, layouts with perspective and just a general improvement of my artistic skills.
